Here is a list of my favorite Jams this year. As I was compiling this I was only a little surprised that my list of music consisted mostly of punk and experimental bands with people of color and women in the forefront of them. It's so great to see things change overtime, or maybe instead of focusing on what we didn't have we just made what we wanted to happen.

1. Peaking Lights "936" (Not Not Fun; 2011)

Tripped out lo fi space sounds. Elements of dub, minimal disco, and punk.

I spent a lot of time listening to this album while painting and driving long distances.

2. Covergirl "Paris Burns" (Captured Tracks; June 2011)

When I heard this I was like yay the essence of Huggy Bear is back!

gay/queer post punk. Covergirl doesn't sound like HB to me they just remind me of them with the boy/girl vocal and fuzzy loud guitars, and literal conscious lyrics. I want to move to the U.K. and be friends with them.

3. Younger Lovers "Rock Flawless" (Bachelor Records; July 2011)

I can't lie I haven't listened to this whole album through and through, but I saw YL play like 5 times this summer, and it was indeed flawless. So fucking good. soul pop punk. I love catchy lyrics, and the video for "keeps on falling down" is a black queer stoner's dance party dream come true.

4. HALO HALO " Manananggal " (Savoury Days Records 2011)

Banjo, female vocals, pause and response drum patterns. This sounds really fucking fun. and the video for the song "Manananggal" is cool too.

5. Jeepneys "Lats Yerk + Herman the Bull" (Human Ear; July 2011)

Anna Luisa is from another planet. I'm glad that she is visiting earth during this lifetime, because I feel like she is helping to expand the minds of whoever she encounters by just kicking it with them. This is space music plane and simple. Stars, Planets, Ancestors from other galaxies are jamming to this. Imagine minimal organic house/dance music, with tap dancing and backwards vocals, and elements of jazz from Sun Ra's Arkestra.

6. Chica Vas "Te Queiro" (Generatto , March 2011)

Drums, Percussion, deep vocals. The ritual like sounds of these songs inspire me so much.

7. American Splits

Bass. Heavy Drums. Saxophone and vocals and all people of color. When I saw American Splits in San Francisco I was so happy. Really happy. This is definitely punk, post punk with elements of The Ex, and Essential Logic. I love this band. They are under the radar too, they don't have any recordings but below Is a link to a live show recording.

8. Shaggy Reaper, Fat Transfer, Teenage Love Songs Live at Bernal Hill, San Francisco

A sunset show with friends. Everyone who played was so good. I don't want to be dorky describing this and ruining it. It was just so good. and you had to be there.

9. Renyosa

I love when folks incorporate D.I.Y. and punk music and aesthetic with their own culture and background. This is something I am constantly striving for with my art and music and it is so satisfying to see it manifested to simply with Renyosa. LOVE.

10. The Eyo Beats "60 Africa 70" (Domino Sound)

All of the songs on this tape are old. way before 2011, but I think it was released earlier this year. A compilation of Afro beats and sounds. Highlife and RNB. Lovely artwork and songs.

The talk was about zines, The Personal is Political. Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, LeTigre, Julie Ruin) was the keynote, and It was such and honor to be a part of a conversation with someone who was one of the folks who paved the way for me as a musician and artist!

I haven't done a zine in 5 or 6 years, but it was great to be invited to be on the panel because that is my artistic root. I made my first zine when I was 17. Interviewing bands and doing punk show reviews, then I moved away from that and started writing about my experience as a black women in the punk scene. It was a really special time period of my life because I was so vulnerable with people I didn't know. Through my zines I became penpals with other women of color who had similar experiences to me. This was so crucial to my creative life, just to feel that I was not alone. So when I got home I looked through some of my old zines.....part embarassing, part cool.

Drummings

Like dreams, drums resound in the night.

In the Americas, slave revolts were hatched by day, to the beat of the lash, and they exploded at night, to the beat of the drum.

When the French burned alive a rebel named Makandal, who had stirred up the blacks of Haiti, it was drums that announced he had turned himself into a mosquito and escaped the blaze.

The masters did not understand the language of drumbeats, but all too well they knew how demonic rhythms passed on forbidden news and summoned secret gods or even the Devil himself, who danced to the beat with bells on his ankles.

The masters never did learn that on the full moon the drum played itself, with no hands. In those moments, when the drum beat the drum, the dead arose to listen to the wonder.

I drew this card for the Collective Tarot deck.

There are many ways to interpret this card but I feel as though this decribes a good basic meaning of it.

THE STAR: The Star is a card that looks to the future. It does not predict any meaningful or powerful change, but it does predict hope and healing. This card suggest clarity of vision spiritual insight. And, most importantly that unexpected help will be coming. With water to quench the querents thirst, with a guiding light to the future.

The Collective Tarot is collaborative tarot deck organized by 5 folks on the west coast and pacific northwest. It features work of friends all over the states, art and imagery that more accurately reflect our lives and experiences. It is a conglomeration of archetypes and symbols that closely pertain to our habits, desires, interest, and ways of life. This is a massive project with over 25 contributors! Right now it is currently out of print, but will be back in print hopefully by the end of the year.

I am not in the core collective of people, but am one of the 25 contributors. This Is a magical and amazing deck I use it all the time. I will post when it is in stock again.

Nellie Mae Rowe is also a Cancer. When I first started drawing I had no idea where it was coming from. Years later I saw Nellie Mae Rowe's work and realized that I was connected to something more. Our works may not look similar, but I am, as she was, apart of the legacy of black americans who create music and art from ancestral memory, intuition, dreams, and the notion of the unknown being known deep down.

Nellie Mae Rowe (1900-1982)

A creative and resourceful self-taught artist, Nellie Mae Rowe gained national recognition for her work during the last decade of her life. Long before her wider success, Rowe was well known locally in Vinings, Georgia by visitors who came to her exuberantly embellished home, which contained her drawings, stuffed dolls, and recycled objects. After the death of her second husband, Rowe turned their home into her personal playhouse, decorating all available space, inside and out, with her fanciful creations. A devout Christian, she attributed her talent to God. Rowe's multifaceted work illustrates her personal mythology, her response to current events and popular culture, and an assimilation of African American spiritual and narrative traditions.
